KWADRAT was founded in 2007 as a project space, run by Martin Kwade in his private apartment in Berlin-Schöneberg. After a successful start, the project-room moved to a location on Adalbertstrasse 20, Berlin-Kreuzberg, in March 2008. Since then Kwade has collaborated with a multitude of artists.
KWADRAT, with a turnaround of about nine shows a year and often themed exhibitions, is open to any representation of art. Showing painting, sculpture, video, performance and multimedia, it has become a meeting point for the young vibrant, emerging art scene in Berlin. Kwade consciously avoids the term “dealer” for his practice, so as to be open for any format of art distribution.
In the last four years KWADRAT has focussed mainly on solo-shows with young artists, providing talented newcomers with the opportunity of a first gallery exhibition.  These include Timo Klöppel, Tobias Dorstal, Su Hwan Choi, Jennifer Oellerich, and others.
KWADRAT has also presented group-shows, in which many well-known artists have participated.  These include: Santiago Sierra, Anselm Reyle, Gregor Hildebrandt, Axel Geis, Joachim Grommek, Alicja Kwade, Corinne Wasmuht, Renaud Regnery and more.
In several curated shows KWADRAT has had the chance to display work from numerous great artists.  Saâdane Afif, Olivier Babin, Liu Chuang, Maria Eichhorn, Marine Hugonnier, Ivan Moudov, Olaf Nicolai, Peter Simensky, Marcus Steinweg, Nasan Tur, and Suse Weber.  The works by these artists were selected by Birte Kleemann, and presented in the exhibition "STUDIES & THEORY", which ran from 24 April 2010 to 15 May 2010.
Ursula Ströbele curated the exhibition "Mise-en-Scène. Skulpturale Rhetorik" which ran from 30 November 2012 to 19 January 2013.  This included work by Awst & Walther, Matthias Bitzer, Andreas Greiner & Armin Keplinger, Seb Koberstädt, Alicja Kwade, Yasmin Müller, Felix Schramm, and Mirko Tschauner.  These artists’ works were curated by J. St. Bernard, Michael Callies, Oliver Croy, Joachim Elzmann, Ben Kaufmann, Andreas Koch, Konrad Lueg, Linn Lühn, Javier Peres, Mihai Pop, Alexander Schröder, Reena Spaulings, Daniela Steinfeld, and Tian Yuan have also exhibited at KWADRAT.  This exhibition, curated by Gregor Hildebrandt and entitled "Buy Art By Artists", ran from 29 June 2013 to 3 August 2013.

After participating in the first Art-Fairs in Brussels and Berlin, KWADRAT has functioned as regular gallery since 2013/14. In June 2019 the gallery moved back to a backyard to the Remise in a new location on Reichenbergerstr. 125, also in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
KWADRAT continues to maintain its excellent reputation as a gallery for both new and established art and artists. Our most recent exhibition was the German premiere of South Korean artist Su Hwan Choi.  Upcoming projects include a varied summer program, including an exhibition of Timo Klöppel’s recent journey across the Atlantic, a solo show featuring American artist Lindsey Landfried and the first Berlin solo show for emerging artist Hannu Prinz. It was followed by exhibitions like: "Flora Nativa" by Celina Gonzalez Sueyro; "POWER HUNGRY" by Caitlin Levin & Henry Hargreaves; "Stadt, Land und schöner Himmel" by Wolfgang Lugmair; "The Mimicry Games" - a project by Philip Kojo Metz; some great group exhibitions and the next German & Europe premiere of the young artist Hiu Tung Ching with the title "Lautlos". Andreas Greiner and Armin Keplinger will present GOLDEN GATES – their first solo exhibition as the artists duo A/A. Last shows in new location: Tobias Dostal, "Tunnelblick". Curent show: "ADULT TOYS"
